Dry Eye
DRY EYE IS
A DISEASE!

Proper diagnosis is the
first step toward relief.

Dry Eye is one of the most under-diagnosed
ocular diseases, but it is the most
common reason why patients
see an eye care professional.

Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in discomfort, visual disturbance or fluxuation, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by changes in the normal tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface.

In fact, dry eye disease occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or produce poor quality tears. That's why it's essential you get your tears analyzed by your eye doctor. Only an eye doctor can properly diagnose your problem and treat it appropriately.

With each blink, tears spread across the cornea (front surface of the eye) providing lubrication, reducing the risk of eye infection and removing foreign material. Excess tears drain into small drainage ducts in the inner corners of the eyelids. Dry eyes can occur when the tear production and drainage is not in balance.

Untreated Dry Eye can lead to other complications including loss of sight, so delaying treatment is not recommended.

Academy Vision offers the latest in objective dry eye diagnostic technology. In 2016 we were the first in the area to add Inflammadry, a lab test to help diagnose dry eye, and then in January 2019 we introduced LipiScan to our office. LipiScan can quickly and comfortably take high definition images of your meibomian (oil) glands to help determine early damage caused by a digital lifestyle.

It’s a fact that we blink 5X less when staring at digital devices, and this causes our oil glands in our lids to atrophy. We are finding that this is happening in younger patients, and often times the resulting gland loss leads to dry eye disease. In fact, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) affects 86% of dry eye patients. This is why Dr. Ullman recommends baseline Lipiscan testing.

Offering the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options in the area, Academy Vision is your first stop when suffering from dry eyes, including: fluctuating vision, burning, red or tearing eyes.

We strive for perfection in visual clarity and comfort. Dry eye is one of the most common and bothersome conditions we encounter. Dry eye is abnormal; patients should not be forced to accept this condition as a normal part of life. Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common eye conditions encountered by eye care practitioners and can often be the first sign of other medical conditions. We offer the latest in dry eye management technology.
